What is a biofuel or agrofuel?
Biofuels, or agrofuels, are products derived from the processing of biomass, plant material produced by agriculture such as beet, wheat, corn, rapeseed, sunflower, potato, and other crops, intended for use in transportation and home heating. As a renewable energy source, they can be mixed with fossil fuels, for example diesel or B7 up to 7%, or even replace them altogether such as in B100. Not only are biofuels interesting in terms of energy sovereignty, they also play a role in food sovereignty because the co-product of the production of this renewable energy, called oilseed meal, is rich in protein and is used for animal feed.
The two main biofuel production sectors are ethanol and ester. There is the ethanol sector producing alcohol-based biofuel, and the ester sector for oil-based biodiesel.
The production of biodiesel is one of Avril’s core business lines.
