What differences are there between the first, second, and third generations of biodiesel?

Indeed, a distinction can be made between three generations of biodiesel depending on the origin of the raw material used and the associated transformation processes. All of them aim to contribute to the environmental transition and to further reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

  • Industrialized in the early 2000s, the first generation of biodiesel is primarily derived from rapeseed, sunflower, and soybean oil.
  • Currently in the development phase, the second generation of biodiesel involves the use of non-food parts of plants as well as agricultural residues to produce biodiesel: forestry residues, straw, corn stalks, and others.
  • As for the third generation, this is still being researched. It seeks to produce biodiesel from micro-organisms such as bacteria, micro-algae, and the like.
