Are biofuels actually in competition with food production ?

As the war in Ukraine continues to disrupt agricultural and energy markets, it reignited the debate around biofuels and their impact on food security. For Avril, this discussion should not be limited to a mere “for or against biodiesel”.

To ensure energy and food sovereignty, we need to rely on the synergy between biodiesel and food production. It is worth noting that thanks to its oilseed sector, France meets 100% of its citizens’ needs for edible oils while by incorporating 7% of biofuel into diesel at the pump. All this while eliminating the need to import 2.4 Mt of fossil diesel fuel, along with the importation of 2.2 Mt of protein-rich oilseed meal to feed its livestock, and avoiding the emission of 40 Mt of CO2 related to transportation.

The production of biodiesel provides a tangible solution to reduce our climate debt and energy dependency, while continuing to supply the food market with local production rooted in the local territories.
